Extra

I'm the Cubester. It's a long story how I got the nickname, but my real name's Jenn. My favorite kinds of comics include comedy and historical so I try to focus on those themes in my own comics. I'm currently in my first year of college, and I'm studying to become a computer science teacher. I come from the 732 in New Jersey, and thus I am a huge fan of PORK ROLL. Not taylor ham, but PORK ROLL.

Interview

1. Would you rather be a cannonball or a drag queen/king?
Uhh...

2. How old are you?
I began to wreak havoc on 7.10.1990.

3. What's the funniest thing that has ever happened to you?
I ran into a fun house mirror when I was 10, breaking my front tooth.

4. On a scale of 1-10 with 1 being the craziest and 10 being the calmest, where would you go?
8

5. If you could be anyone, who would you be?
Jenn Stattner. I heard she's got a pretty sweet job.

6. Where did you get the idea for the username you are currently using?
Basically way back when I was in the 6th grade, I drew this cube with a face and called it Cubey. Thus, my friends gave me the nickname Cubester.

7. How close would you say you are on achieving your goals?
Well, I'm in my first year of college so I've got 3 years to go.

8. Name your favourite commercial.
I like those commercials with annoying songs, like the Optimum Triple Play and the Free Credit Report ones.

9. What would be one phrase that identifies you?
Random.

10. If you could have any super power you want, what would it be?
The ability to make pork roll appear from nowhere.

11. What is your lucky number? Do you consider 13 unlucky?
343. I don't consider 13 to be unlucky, no.

12. Name a few pet peeves.
I can't stand when apostrophes are used incorrectly.

13. If you can rename yourself, what would it be?
Binque Quinnhinhanhhandindindinskiskiskitomatoski.

14. Do you believe that a 4th grader and a teacher can fall in love and get engaged in real life?
Not unless the 4th grader had been left back about 10 times, making them the legal age to be married.

15. Do you think Inuyasha should continue? Do you even watch Inuyasha?
No. I don't watch it and I'd rather not.

16. If given the opportunity, would Satoshi kiss Daisuke on the lips?
I have no idea what you're talking about.

17. Would you press a button that would give you 50000 dollars at the expense of the death of someone you don't know?
no

18. Do you think the guy who plays Harry Potter is too macho to play him?
Honestly I think he’s really nerdy and don't understand why little girls go crazy over him.

19. Assuming you had a baby, would you name it Shamalamadingdong, or Michael Jackson?
Shamalamadingdong. Definitely.

20. Roses are red, violets are blue. I was murdered, was it by you?
Nope. It was Geddy Lee.

MANGA RELATED:

1. What are some great tips you can share about drawing?
Practice. When I was younger I copied drawings and then eventually I could create my own characters.

2. When did you first start to draw manga?
Who knows? 4th grade maybe? It wasn't anything serious. I only started drawing seriously when I joined Smackjeeves, which was last year(2008)

3. Name the greatest influence on your manga.
Hmm…Well I like to write about real life. For instance in my most recent comic, Cobalt Blue Skies, the setting is at the Jersey Shore, which is where I grew up. So I'd say that experiences and events in my own life are a big influence.

4. Has DREAM been helpful to you in any way?
Yes! I'm happy that I was accepted, now more people will have a chance to read my stories.

5. What was the first manga you ever bought for yourself?
Wow. That one's hard... I think it was Zoids: Chaotic Century.

6. Name the pens you use for drawing manga and how you use them. If you ink digitally, name the sizes and types of brushes you use and how you use them.
I basically just use Sharpies and any kind of thin black pen I can find.

7. How long does it take you to do one page from planning to toning and lettering?
It takes anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour to draw/ink the page, and then the process of scanning and editing in Paint.NET takes like half an hour.

8. What is the average length of your mangas?
Well, I've never actually finished one. :) The longest I've ever gotten to is 4 chapters, and that's nowhere near finished.

9. After this manga, what type of manga would you like to draw next?
Don't know, but it'll take place in the past. Maybe the 1950s or 60s.

10. What inspired you to draw manga?
I guess just reading manga in general.

11. When did you first start to draw manga?
See question #2.

12. Who do you say gave you the most support while drawing manga?
My friends. They always wanted to know what happened next :)

13. Do you want to draw manga as a living?
No, I'm going to work as a computer science teacher. It would be pretty cool to actually get something published though, maybe as a side job during the summer when there's no school.

14. Do you prefer traditional or computerized when it comes to coloring?
I prefer to use colored pencils and markers. I only use the computer for erasing mistakes, toning, and lettering.

15. Have you ever tried to promote your manga in any way? Name some please.
I use Smackjeeves, but other than that, just letting my friends read it.

16. Was there ever a period of time where you completely stopped drawing manga for any reason?
I always liked to draw, but the first time I tried to draw an actual comic was in 2004(I think), but every time I had an idea for a story I always thought of a better one a few days later.

17. Do you usually know the ending of your manga before you begin? Do you enjoy knowing/not knowing the ending?
For Cobalt Blue Skies I pretty much know the ending, but I have no idea how I'm going to end my other series, Retro Café. I think it's going to be interesting, since I have no idea where it's going.

18. Out of all your series, which one do you feel closest to? Please describe it in a few sentences.
Definitely Cobalt Blue Skies, since it takes place where I grew up. Basically it's just the experiences of the main character and her very strange friend throughout college.

19. Have you ever done a doujinshi? Which series was it based on?
Nope.

20. Which of your characters do you like the most?
Nate Colucci, from Retro Café. He’s actually from the 1970s, but he accidentally ends up in the present day. It's a lot of fun to draw him confused from all the things we think are normal, but didn't exist in the 1970s.
